I thought it would be nice to let others see why I chose to run the marathon next year, by reading my Jenrick Experience submission:

Picture this scene . . .

It was a bright Sunday morning; the date was April 13 2008. I was sitting at home watching the start of the London Marathon with little Charlotte bouncing on my knee.

I kept listening to the interviews from these everyday people describing what had driven them to train for months on end to run these 26 miles – some were able-bodied, others disabled yet all of them had been working towards this single shared date for an entire year, if not more.

As the event started and the runners began plodding the many miles ahead, I continued to listen to their stories of what personal motivation led them to challenge themselves to complete this extreme challenge.

All their stories were powerful – and all had goals of helping other people who they considered less fortunate than themselves. Their combined messages touched me deeply.

As I listened I said to Charlotte “Daddy ran the London marathon 10 years ago raising lots of money for charity.”

No sooner had those words left my mouth I felt a great surge of guilt – here are all these people running the marathon, achieving personal goals and helping others at the same time – and here I am sitting at home on a couch watching this amazing event on TV.

I looked at Charlotte again and without hesitation said “ . . .and he’ll be running it again next year to raise money for lots of children who need our help!”

It’s funny, being a Dad has made me look at so many things again from a completely different perspective - this was one perfect example.

I had to do something and I am capable of doing something, there was simply no other option.

So, here I am entered in the 2009 London Marathon aiming to raise some much needed funding for ‘Children in Crisis’ and also make my daughter incredibly proud of her father.

So, a few bits of essential info to support my application . . .

In 2009 I am running the London Marathon on behalf of a children’s charity called ‘Children in Crisis.’

This is one of the less known children’s charities and they were so grateful when I called them and asked if I could run for them.

They not only help a number of kids in the UK, but also further afield and their work is orientated around giving children an education – regardless of personal circumstances or geographical location.

They just want these kids to have the educational foundation that we take for granted, so that they have options available to them as they grow older.

This charity help to put projects in place now, that will help children for their entire life – that was one key reason I wanted to run for them.

How the Jenrick Experience help me help this charity . . .

I have already begun my training and have entered the Great South Run in late October to ensure I am well ahead of my training targets.

From a charitable perspective, I have pledged to raise in excess of £1,500 for Children in Crisis and I am 100% committed and confident that I will achieve this – ideally with Jenrick’s assistance.

I have already committed a £250 personal donation to the charity. I am certain I can raise a further £500 from my own contacts and network. However, I would love to be considered for the Jenrick Experience Award for an additional £1,000 to enable me to beat my initial fund raising target.

To run this marathon is ‘a dream come true’ for me (in a crazy punishing kind of way), but more importantly, I know that our combined efforts and support will help improve the futures for many many children.

P.S. and although I am ten years older, I desperately want to beat my time when I last entered it!!!!

P.P.S. I’ll promise to wear a T-Shirt with a big Jenrick logo on

Trevor Lee, Managing Director of Jenrick Commercial, saw several advantages with the See My CV format:

“Video CVs are so helpful within every aspect of the recruitment process. From our perspective, acting as a conduit between the jobseeker and the employer, it saves so much time. It means that we can immediately get a feel for the candidate, ‘putting a face to a name’ as the saying goes, and therefore speak with much more of an insight when we are developing shortlists for roles.

I would recommend that any jobseeker should spend some time creating a Video CV – it will definitely help to give you an advantage in a competitive market.”

For some employers, Video CVs are an essential part of their recruitment process as it enables them to gain an immediate snapshot of the jobseeker and can also saves them so much time (by not having to give up a whole day for first interviews).

Video CVs however are not a new trend, as highlighted by Simon Murphy, creator of the See My CV job board and CV database:

“We initially started using Video CVs when we were recruiting for Compaq, over seven years ago. Back then, the methods were very different, as digital cameras and mobile phones were unavailable, yet the reasons were exactly the same as today.

The time pressures upon employers are increasing so anything we can do to make the recruitment process simpler, should be adopted. Video CVs fit this mould perfectly as they provide employers with a clear synopsis of a person within just a couple of minutes.

This enables the employer to effectively evaluate the jobseekers ‘softskills’ and see how they would complement the existing organisational culture.

We found it made a massive improvement to the interview process, reducing time and stress on everyone concerned.”

The See My CV job board has recently been re-launched after an extensive re-development, and is providing jobseekers with the opportunity to upload a Video (and written) CV for employers to contact them through, plus search and apply for a host of current UK jobs within minutes.

With Catlin Group joining us on the sponsor list, as title sponsor, this means one of the most important scientific studies of our generation is officially ready for launch – The Catlin Arctic Survey will take place from February 2009.

On announcing the sponsorship, Stephen Catlin, Chief Executive of Catlin Group stated:

“As a speciality insurance/reinsurance company, the potential effects of global warming will have a direct impact on our business. However, there are gaps in our knowledge and much of the evidence regarding the pace of global warming is not scientifically proven. Catlin is a company that manages risk based on hard facts, so we believe that obtaining this information is vital. The Catlin Arctic Survey will help inform all those who must plan for the potential effects of global warming.”

In addition to the Catlin Group, the Catlin Arctic Survey gained recent recognition and comment from other areas, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The Executive Director of UNEP, Mr Achim Steiner stated:

“For the international community to secure, through the Arctic Survey’s efforts, the actual measurements of the thickness of the North Pole sea ice cover will greatly assist the complex task that our scientists and policy-makers face in determining the precise impacts of global warming on the planets support systems.”

Mr Steiner also emphasised the need for the global community to scale up it’s response to climate change and said that UNEP would work closely with the Catlin Arctic Survey to help raise public awareness.

The World Wildlife Fund is a global partner of the Catlin Arctic Survey and will be presenting the official scientific findings report from the survey to the UN Climate Change Conference of Parties in November 2009 (COP15) in Copenhagen.

Other recent comments include, Professor Wieslaw Maslowski, one of the world’s leading scientists in the study of Arctic sea ice based at the US Navy’s Department of Oceanography in Monterey, California, and a lead scientific partner of the Catlin Arctic Survey, commented:

“We’ll be integrating the survey’s actual observations with same-day weather data to obtain near real time model estimates of sea ice conditions on a daily basis. In this way we can test the accuracy of our modelling of the ice’s thickness and re-assess our projections as to how long the surviving thicker ice is likely to last as a perennial feature.”

Jenrick CPI & Jenrick Engineering is continuing to sponsor and assist in a number of ways (including Jenrick CPI’s introduction of a major satellite communications company to assist with comms from the ice) to ensure that the Catlin Arctic Survey not only take place, but is a major success.

“For the sake of our children and grand-children, I pray that we will heed the findings of the Arctic Survey and can only commend this remarkably important project to you.” - HRH The Prince of Wales

This is the third in a three-part article by Cassie Brummitt, summer employee of Simon Holdings Plc, on the options available to students after they leave college. Click here to go back to part 1, or here for part 2. This section will discuss another after-college option: beginning full-time work.

Many people choose not to go to university at all, which is a perfectly valid choice. Some are not interested in academic study, in which case there may be vocational opportunities available to them, whereas some simply want to get started in full-time work.

In Emily’s case, she changed her mind several times as to what career choice she wanted to make, which is pretty normal. At college she studied for a diploma in Childcare, but she was disillusioned by her experiences in a nursery in which she was underpaid and overworked, and she began reconsidering her employment and career options.

After questioning herself for some time, she decided she would start full-time Childcare work while pursuing her passion of modelling on the side, instead of dedicating herself to another three years of study; however, the combination of such taxing work, modelling, and moving out of her parents’ house has made things difficult for her.

She soon found that becoming independent and finding careers in the Surrey area, close to her family, was more difficult than she had expected, and that the general advice she had been given at school about gaining work didn’t help her situation at all. What she needed was honest and helpful career advice.

Because I’ve been working at Jenrick and have seen the help the company can provide, I referred her here and she received expert guidance from recruitment consultants in the Walton area, and she is in the process of being given a job in Weybridge in a supportive nursery nearby at flexible hours and with decent pay.

The thing that struck me about Emily’s (and Josh’s) experiences is how different the workplace is, compared to how it’s presented at school. Emily, who was once so sure of her career path, had her plans rendered almost completely useless because she wasn’t taught how to solve the problems she faced. I consider myself very lucky because I have my next three years planned out, giving me time to learn and develop before I return to look for a full-time job in Walton or nearby areas.

Overall, though, there are countless job opportunities and other options for students leaving college, and each person’s situation is different. Not everyone knows what they want to do for the next few months, much less the next few years, and higher education is just one way of progressing into the world.
